Upcycling: wax polish

One of the most important stages in finishing and protecting furniture is waxing. But first you need to prepare the wood so that the wax is more effective.

How do you prepare wood?

This is not a very difficult operation, but it is very important. Wood is prepared in 3 stages: First, remove the dust to ensure a clean surface. Next, the whole piece of wooden furniture is carefully dewaxed. Lastly, any cracks, holes or hollows in the material are repaired to provide a sufficiently sound base for the work.

1 - Remove dust: remove all dust, particles and loose residues. You can also use a broom, hoover or brush, for example. Then simply use a slightly dampened sponge, cloth or floorcloth to remove any remaining material.

2 - Waxing the wood: remove old traces of wax or oil with a wax remover to obtain a sufficiently clean piece of furniture. This opens up the pores in the wood to improve the adhesion of the wax without damaging the material. Don't forget to degrease the wood with suitable products before applying the wax.

3 - Treating cracks: cracks, holes or gaps that may appear during unavoidable work on the material are treated beforehand. We recommend using a putty, paste or wood filler to allow the wood to move properly. It is very easy to shape and sand afterwards.

How do I wax with wood furniture wax?

Waxing wood with wood furniture wax requires a bit of method. There are 3 steps: first, apply several thick coats of wax to the wooden furniture to be protected. Then you wait long enough for it to dry thoroughly. Finally, all that's left to do is polish it vigorously to add shine for a more attractive finish.

1 - Applying the wax: the wax is applied with a sponge, cloth or brush. It should be applied in circular movements to ensure the wax is fully absorbed. We strongly recommend using 2 or 3 coats of the product, taking into account the porosity of the wood. We also recommend finishing the application in the direction of the wood grain.

2 - Leave to dry: wait for the turpentine to evaporate completely. The room should be properly ventilated to prevent solvent vapours from concentrating in one place. It is also advisable to wait 1 to 2 hours before finishing with a vigorous polishing of the entire surface.

3 - Buffing the wax: Don't hesitate to rub the wood vigorously with a brush once the wax is completely dry. The back and forth movement should be as regular as possible for best results. Finish with a woollen or cotton cloth to ensure the wax penetrates deep into the wood fibres. Thereafter, it is important to maintain your furniture regularly to ensure it is well protected.
