Upcycling : the cutting technique

You don't need to know how to paint to decorate a piece of furniture with a wide variety of motifs and designs (comic strips, floral motifs, geometric shapes, etc.). All you need is a few scraps of cut-up paper or old comic strips and some paper glue!

Of all the creative materials, paper is perhaps the one with the most possibilities. Full of resources, paper is not confined to its original use as a medium for drawing or painting. Cut up and reworked, it can give life to a whole host of DIY projects. In the run-up to the festive season, for example, it's easy to make festive decorations as a family using recycled paper. But paper can also be used to decorate everyday items, in the form of DIY flower crowns, ephemeral table centrepieces or decorative materials for customising furniture.

DIY CUSTOMISATION: HOW DO YOU DECORATE A PIECE OF FURNITURE WITHOUT PAINT?

At first glance, you might think that the only way to give a piece of furniture a new look is to repaint it. But while this may be the quickest technique, it's not the only one, because you can also customise a wardrobe, sideboard or even an armchair using mosaics (earthenware or wood), plaster mouldings, wallpaper scraps and even canework. Among all these creative techniques, we decided to give a chair a new lease of life using a Piscou comic strip and then to create a painting using a Mickey comic strip.

Wallpaper is also often used to bring interiors and exteriors of furniture or drawers back to life.

Although wood is often the ideal support, other materials such as glass or metal can be given a makeover using paper. You'll need to use special glues that bond more easily to these materials.
